I wanted to do a bit of a refresher with this blog. You see, I think that sometimes my bariatric clients forget about how their procedure is a tool. It is an awesome tool, but it is still just a tool. Any bariatric surgery is a tool. This is the same for the VSG, MGB, Bypass, DS, or revision surgery.
The results are directly linked to how we use our tool.
During the first year post surgery, we have a lot of inflammation and then a lot of restriction. This is the time that we need to get a good grasp on good eating and exercise habits. Having said that, I do want to also say that if you did not hit your goal during the first year, all is not lost. You will have to learn again how your tool is to be used in order to get the scale moving again.
There are no tricks here. Bariatric results are directly linked to your overall diet. If you eat as you did prior to surgery, you will gain back the weight that you lost. If you eat high quality sources of protein, fat and lots of veggies and berries, you will NOT gain back the weight.
If you choose to eat highly inflammatory foods such as fast food, burgers, french fries, pizza, pasta etc, you will gain weight. If you eat high quality sources of protein, fat and lots of veggies and berries, you will NOT gain back the weight.
If you like to go out to lots of restaurants, you will gain weight. If you eat high quality sources of protein, fat and lots of veggies and berries, you will NOT gain back the weight.
Do you see the pattern here? You, and only you are 100% responsible for your short and long term results post bariatric surgery.
Now is the time to dive into nutrition and learn as much as you can about our SAD Standard American Diet. You want to truly understand the reasons why this diet led to weight gain and illness in the first place.
Now is also the time to put down the packaged foods and to pick up the fresh food.
I feel that we are moving towards a healthier diet but more needs to be done. We need to take full responsibility for the foods that we choose and the choices that we make.
If you have not reached your weight loss goals or if you have had a re-gain, get ready to do the work and to get the scale moving again. Dig deep and get yourself ready to eat the way you need to eat to lose the weight that you need to lose.
