This is a very important topic and it is on the mind of every single bariatric client.  There isn’t a single day that goes by that I don’t sit down to discuss the dreaded weight loss surgery stall with a client or two.  Why are we all so afraid of stalls when we already know that it is a physiological part of extreme weight loss?

We need to understand the stall and not get upset and throw the scale at the wall. We are not to give up at this point and think that the surgery didn’t work for us.  It is the reverse.  The surgery is working and the tool is working and this is a built-in part of the journey. Revel at the fact that you are in the race and not on the sidelines only watching.

Our body does not want to lose weight and fat.  It wants to hold onto it.  It is geared to protect us and when it feels threatened, it holds on even tighter.  So what is a weight loss surgery patient to do?  Keep pushing forward – past your set point.  Eventually, you will win the battle over the stall.

Sometimes these plateaus can last for even a month.  This is not the time to get complacent.  This is the time to put on your boxing gloves and go for another round against your metabolism.  Don’t see these stalls like a terrible thing.  Your body is doing its’ job by holding onto weight.  You just need to show it who is in control and eventually your stall will break and the scale will continue to move in the right direction.

When you see that the scale has not moved in a week or more and your caloric intake is not sufficient to maintain or gain weight, these are some steps that can help you get out of a dreaded stall.

  • Go for a consistent, daily long walk.
  • If you are exercising already, step it up a notch.
  • Weigh yourself only two to three times a week.
  • Increase your water intake.
  • Increase your protein intake.
  • Remove any sugars and refined carbohydrates from your diet.
  • Remove dairy as it can be inflammatory for some of us.
  • Make sure you are getting sufficient sleep.
  • Reduce your stress levels.
  • Don’t graze all day long.
  • Practice a bit of intermittent fasting.

 

Next time you want to go to war with your scale, take a big breath and trust this process.  Weight loss surgery isn’t the easy way out and you already know that.  You need to take the steps to work “together” with your tool in order to reach your short and long term goals.
